Then and Now! How technology made my life better #NoonNgayon

Someone left a post-it on a note that was given to me in the office the other day. I looked down upon this yellow square piece of paper that probably took half a tree to make and thought to myself… WTF!

post-it1

A Post it? I haven’t seen that in ages!  OMG, like really?

I just got me thinking about how much technology has improved our lives lately.

Instead of Post-its nowadays on my wall, I get posts on my wall from Facebook.

post-it-notes

Instead of mountains of files I now carry around a tiny USB.

Paperwork

Instead of a courier pigeons or, even more ghastly: pagers, we all now have sleek cell phones that can call our friends direct instead of blurting out our most intimate words to an operator who types it out to be paged.

pager

Oh and best of all, thanks to new technologies like Facebook, we’ve all moved on from those other prehistoric forms of communication… Friendster!

Life is indeed much better thanks to technology!

Tips for Accomplishing your Goals in the New Year

Every Sunday morning, on my radio program at Mellow 94.7, I invite guests to share their knowledge with me and my listeners. I invite them over to “edumacate” us in their fields of expertise.

Today, I was fortunate to have a very driven and young achiever who came to share his advice on accomplishing your goals for the new year.

My guest was Ryan Songalia, the youngest writer ever inducted into the Boxing Writers Association of America, the organization which selected Manny Pacquiao as the Fighter of the Decade last year. Ryan’s stories have also been published in the top publications in New Jersey such as the Jersey Journal and the Star Ledger. His work has been quoted in FoxSports Yahoo Sports as well as Philippine publications like the Manila Bulletin, the Philippine Star and ABS-CBN. He has also been interviewed as a boxing expert resource person by TV networks, radio shows and publications in the United States and the Philippines.

Here’s Ryan Songalia’s tips for accomplishing your goals in the new year.

1. Show your initiative – Its easy to make excuses and harder to make strides towards your goals. The worst excuse I hear from people is that they cannot achieve their dreams because they come from urban areas or didn’t go to the best schools. I always jest, “Hey, I went to the same schools as you did.”

-Nobody will care about your dreams the way that you do, so take life by the reins and don’t wait for someone else to make your life’s decisions for you.

-It’s easy to dream and never take it further. Come up with a plan of action and carry it out. I sometimes mentor children and teens in New Jersey and I always ask them what they want to do with their lives. If they say they want to be a pro basketball player, I ask them how they are striving to reach that goal right now. It’s never too early to plan for the future.

I never let the fact that I haven’t finished college yet hold me back. I finished my first year of college back in 2006 and couldn’t wait to get started as a writer. I was like a powder keg searching desperately for a match. I wasn’t going to let any deficiency in credits hold me back. Just as a boxer must box to stay sharp, a singer must sing and a guitar player must play, so too must a writer write to stay sharp.

And its not as if I was sitting in a well-equipped office with high-speed wireless internet submitting stories to different publications. I was 19 living on my own in New Jersey and my parents had moved away and I had lost my job in a supermarket so I had no money to pay for internet. What I would do was go up on my rooftop and steal wi-fi from surrounding buildings and email my stories whenever the connection was strong enough. In a sad twist, my house was burglarized and my laptop was stolen but I didn’t let that deter me. Whatever money I had, went to internet cafes so I could write my stories. I lost my cable too so I spent my time reading books on the subject of boxing to familiarize myself better with the history of chronicling boxing.

2. Fake it til you make it – This was a term that a boxer once told me while he was rising through the rankings. He wasn’t a champion yet but that didn’t stop him from looking the part. This is an adaptation of the line, “Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have.” Confidence and the self-belief that says, “I’m a success because I desire it to be” is what separates the dreamers from the accomplished.

-Make everything about you shout confidence, from the way you dress to the way you stand and speak. Never second guess yourself, and stick by your guns. As a writer, I sometimes say things that are quite unpopular, but if I say them, I must stick by them because there was something there that made me say those things.

3. Know your strengths – Very important factor because this goes along with striving for attainable goals.

– I have a joke that I tell about my decision to follow my chosen profession. I say, from the moment I walked into the boxing gym, my trainer knew I was going to be a great writer. I knew fairly quickly that I wasn’t cut out for the life of a boxer but this was something I had a passion for. Through constant trial and error, I was able to parlay this passion into a life as a journalist, focusing mainly on boxing. And now I have other endeavors, including this month’s Rogue Magazine on shelves now. Two of my mini-pieces on American based editors are included.

-If you’re a people person, engage people on a personal basis and let this shine through. If you’re into computers, be on the front edge of technological advances in your industry. Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets are reshaping our means of communication but the next outlet is just around the corner.

4. “If you believe then you can achieve” – This was a lyric from a 2Pac song, but it applies to reality. I was 19 years old, just made the unpopular choice to take a break from school and here I was trying to make it as a writer. So few people believed in me early on, save for those who saw me climbing onto my rooftop with my laptop under my arm every morning and climbing down at night.

– I feel a lot of people judge you based on what they can do, not knowing what you are made of inside. You know yourself better than anyone else so let yourself be the ultimate authority in what you want to do.

– As children we are told to respect our elders, I feel this is of supreme significance because our elders who have come before us are fountains of experience that we should not forsake. Along the way, working alongside the much more experienced newspaper writers helped me by giving me a mold by which to grow from, then eventually become my own entity. I try to absorb as much from my elders as possible.

5. Empower yourself – Mentally, physically and spiritually, if you build yourself into a fort, you can not be defeated. The uninformed are the ones victimized by society so continuously work towards improving your acuity. I like to read constantly, and I find it keeps my sense intune and mind sharp. I like to diversify my subjects also so as not to be caught off guard in spontaneous conversation.

And those are your top tips for accomplishing your goals this new year.

Top 10 Cutest Asian Bloggers! (cyber cuties part 1)

Ok so in doing all my internet research and stalking hotties online online work, I’ve realized that there are a lot of very beautiful bloggers in the interwebosphere! These full time, top bloggers are usually a combination of talent, beauty and smarts. Many of them have used the internet as a catapult to shoot them straight to the top of the media world.

What’s even more impressive is how these online entrepreneurs are, finding creative ways of using their talents and passions, and sharing it with the world in such a way that makes us all want to listen to them.

I’ve made this short list of top bloggers who are indeed in a league of their own and who also posses the drop dead gorgeous looks that make their geeky minions drool for every new blog post they create. I listed them in no particular order, and have split it up into two parts.

Pictures were taken from each cute bloggers respective sites and links to their blogs are listed with their description.

Here’s part 1 (again in no particular order) of the Top 10 Cutest Asian Bloggers!

Wendy Cheng / Xiaxue

It’s hard to talk about top bloggers in Asia without mentioning Xiaxue, she’s a Singaporean blogger who’s blog boasts 50,000 views per day! She’s also been rated as one of the top 100 blogs by Technorati, a feat that’s extremely difficult to obtain. In fact, each blog post of Xiaxue garners at least 300 comments!

Just like any rockstar has their haters, blogstars get their own share of jealousy and anger. If you’re one of the anti-Xiaxue readers then you’re probably already complaining and saying that she just photoshops all her pictures. Something that Xiaxue herself admits: “…Do not give the credit of those looks to me! Give it to Adobe Photoshop. My pictures are all enhanced (and trust me, I am good at it), so minus 40% and you get the real thing. =D” she says in her blog.  But all I have to say is that it’s her blog that’s famous. We all get to see her blog, and rarely her. So if they are photoshopped… well who cares, it’s working! You can tell by the numbers.

Wendy Cheng’s personal blog had stories of travels, parties, fashion and more! But don’t let her seemingly sweet photos fool you as this top blogger also packs a punch! Her blogs have been known to stir up controversy and quarrels. She’s been known to have defamatory and even racist posts every so often. She even had a very controversial blog-off battle with another member in this Top 10 Cutest Bloggers list.

Nowadays, you’ll find lots of endorsers and a more calm and mature writer in her posts. Perhaps signs of growth and her growing popularity, or perhaps just a calm before the storm, waiting for the next big thing to catch Xiaxue’s bad side.

Unfortunately for the guys out there, this cute blogger is already married. Xiaxua was married to American Michael Sayre, whom she allegedly met online. They wed on 13 March 2010 at Italian restaurant Forlino.

Ringo Tan / Cheeserland

Ringo, Rin, Cheesillicious, Cheesie, Cheeserland or whatever you want to call this fashionista. Cheeserland is one of the top bloggers from Malaysia who mostly writes for her personal blog and thus, can have some random stuff in there. Mostly, her blogs contain fashion, travel, her dogs, hair tutorials (she loves styling her hair apparently) and her personal fashion cheats (how to look like magazine models or celebs).

Nowadays, Ringo Tan is known as a celebrity blogger from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is known as “Cheesie” to many of her readers. Sources say that Ringo Tan loves cheese so much that she named her blog as such. Her blog shares her unique personality with readers and is updated very regularly. Trying to define her blog any more than that may be difficult as Ringo herself claims that both she and her blog are very “confusing.”

“Being confused is my nature. To find out the true reason behind my confused nature, you might have to trace all the way back to what my mom ate some 20 odd years ago years ago. I’m so confused even Confucius finds me confusing. Well, in a cheeshell, i might be a confused mousie who thinks that she is a mutated bunny obsessed with cheese, or a obsessed bunny who thinks that she is a confused mousie mutated into cheese, or a confused cheese who thinks that she is a mutated mousie obsessed with bunnies. Crap. Which altercheesego just spoke?” she says.

Michelle Phan / RiceBunny

I can hear your blasphemous screams already… “Michelle Phan isn’t from Asia?!!? You idiot!” Well…. my very judgmental and loud readers, first of all, I didn’t call this the “Top 10 Cutest Bloggers from Asia” list, did I? No, I called it the “Top 10 Cutest Asian Bloggers!” Someone from Michelle Phan’s lifeline was from Asia, Vietnam to be exact, so thus, I would like to argue that this RiceBunny still does fall under the “Cutest Bloggers from Asia” title. Secondly, she’s just too damn cute to leave off this list! Seriously, Michelle Phan is a make up artist, video editor, blogger and entrepreneur, a total package of beauty and talent, so how could I leave Michelle Phan off the list?

Michelle Phan is a Vietnamese American known for creating make-up and beauty tutorials on YouTube. Knows also with her other alias of RiceBunny, her YouTube channel has been viewed over 50,000,000 times and counting! In November 2010, Michelle reached 1 million subscribers and became the #1 most subscribed female on YouTube. Showing that she is indeed the Top Female Video Blogger out there.

Best Cartoon Pics for Facebook: Carton Characters Invade Profile Pictures Online

Does your friend Dan look a lot like that Road Runner Cartoon? Maybe your aunt Shelby is starting to look a tad bit like Richie Rich? Is your buddy Paul looking like the Smurfs? Are over 50% of your friends starting to look like cartoon characters?

If you’re wondering about the whole “cartoon pictures for facebook profile” thing that’s going on right now, then fear not. You have not teleported into an inter-dimentional portal where cartoon characters rule the world. Instead, the cartoon character pictures are merely a symbol of people’s advocacy against violence towards kids.

The whole cartoon character profile picture thing started when this little note started making its rounds on Facebook:

“Change your facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until monday (Dec.6) there should be no human faces on FB, but an invasion of memories. THIS IS A CAMPAIGN TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDRENing its rounds on Facebook”

Cool as this cause may seem, it was later discovered that there is no official event, organization or committee that is managing this. Instead, reports even say that it may have initially started as a joke or even a dare just to get someone to change their profile picture to that of a cartoon character.

Either way, there isn’t really much harm done, other than a cartoonish looking portrait on your profile.

It was too hard for me to pick just one cartoon, so here’s my top 5 picks for Best Cartoon Pics for Facebook.

*Not on here, but would be if I wasn’t so sleepy at freakin’ 2:06am…. would be the Ghostbusters, He-Man and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

5. Daria – Ultimate 90s Cartoon!

If I had to sum up the 90s into three words… it would be: “Like totally dude.”

On the other hand, if I had to sum up the 90s into one word, it would be “DARIA”

Daria Morgendorffer is a smart & cynical girl who goes through teenage life as an proud outsider in a world of mainly idiotic teens and condescending adults. This MTV series had a great run with many episodes often referencing current events in pop culture.

The people of Lawndale just don’t get Daria Morgendorffer. She’s cool with that. See, Daria was born alienated, and now she’s just trying to make it through high school with as little human contact as possible. Popularity, friends, activities… whatever. Daria lacks enthusiasm, but she makes up for it with sarcasm. Daria is the spin-off of MTV’s most sucessful cartoon, Beavis and Butt-Head.

Like…. totally dude.

4. Spiderman and His Amazing Friends and those other old school Marvel Cartoons

I don’t know about you…. but I first had a geekgasm after discovering Spiderman had amazing friends. Of course, this awesomeness of a show was aptly named: “Spiderman and his Amazing Friends” as creativity was not discovered until the mid 90s.

Other than Spiderman, Iceman and Firestar, there were also the other 60s Marvel cartoons like the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, The Submariner and more! They all showed right after class and I remember rushing home to see them! Ahhhh, the memories… CLANG BAM POW!

0

3. Thunder Cats and their Hoes

Thunder…. Thunder…. THUNDER CATS…. HOOOOOOOO!!!

Let’s face it… this cartoon just had waaay too many adult related imageries that still haunts our minds. From Lion-O’s sword getting a boner every time he sees the other characters in their dominatrix outfits to Cheetara’s very revealing outfit; this was definitely one of my favorites! Oh and my sword got long and hard too whenever I saw Cheetara….

thundercats_lion-o_01

2. G.I. Joe

Knowing is half the battle and watching the G.I. Joes usually took up half the time I was supposed to spend studying. This racist cartoon, where all Asians knew karate and all black dudes rhymed when they spoke, was one amazing misrepresentation of wars and the military. But hella fun to watch! YO JOE!

gijoe_07

The man had his own G.I. Joe character, and the cartoon version's arms had to be toned down from from their original size in order to fit on the TV screen.

He'll fight for freedom wherever there's trouble! G.I

1. ORIGINAL Transformers Cartoon Profile Pic

Let’s face it, those robots that turned into cars were the coolest thins ever! And no, I’m not talking about the GoBots…. I’m talking about the Autobots and Decepticons! Also, though Megan Fox really gave us our money’s worth, nothing beats the original Transformers! ROLL OUT!

Anyway, sorry but let me change my title from: Best Cartoon Pics for Facebook: Carton Characters Invade Profile Pictures Online to just:

BEST CARTOONS EVER!

Bill Gates speech: 11 rules your kids did not and will not learn in school

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!

Rule 2: The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

Teaching Kids from Smokey Mountain about Blogging

I just got an invite for an opportunity to change lives in a positive way. Tomorrow, Saturday June 19, I’ll be speaking to 25 kids from Smokey Mountain about the powers of blogging. I’ll be telling them about the cool things I’ve been able to do and the achievements my fellow bloggers have accomplished because of a simple blog.

We’re hoping to inspire them to also put their thoughts into words and maybe, just maybe, someone will be able to find their amazing personalities and may be able to help them reach their dreams and goals.

I’m a firm believer that ONE PERSON can make a difference and I’m hoping that positive things come out of this.

Below was the letter I was sent just yesterday. My schedule was full, but I had to clear it up a bit for this really amazing event!

I’ll post updates and pictures after the event! I’m really excited and nervous about this one! Hope it goes well!

BUHAY KO SA SMOKEY MOUTAIN: Invite from Manila Jaycess

Hi Vince!

Thanks for your support! As we briefly spoke on the phone, VJ and I are doing a project with the Manila Jaycess. Our project, entitled BUHAY KO SA SMOKEY MOUNTAIN aims to teach kids how to use blogging to change their lives. It is a weekly session, starting this Saturday.

For this weeks session, what we hope your talk will achieve is to introduce the world of blogging to the kids. At the end of the talk, we hope that we will create an excitement in the kids that they want to learn. It will be more of an inspirational talk, not a technical talk about blogs. Maybe you can show them your blog (wheninmanila.com) and other blogs. The stories behind the blog is as important as the blog itself. It would be great if you can bring other bloggers or other members of your team =)

The session will start 2 PM but your talk will start 230 PM and end 4 PM. I’ll forward you the map going to the center. This is in partnership with Young Focus Foundation. The center will have 25 computers all with internet access. We can provide you with a computer and an LCD projector if you need to show them any visual presentation like blogs or other stuff.

The event will be documented by Range Finder Philippines.

I have CC’d VJ so if you have any questions, please let us know.

I’m sure the kids will be really excited to have a DJ there =)

Thanks again!

A Short Bio of the Kids:

– High school to college students

The REAL Value of Social Networking by Seth Godin

A very interesting clip with Seth Godin talking about the REAL value of relationships. He talks about useless stats like Facebook Friends and Twitter Followers who won’t really do much for your business.

Seth Godin says that the real value is in the relationships that are formed when you go out of your way to help people. When you’ve exchange worthwhile ideals. Networking is always important when it’s real and is just a huge distraction if it’s fake. It does not translate.

Vince at iBlog6 Summit – From the Eyes (and Links) of Other Bloggers

The iBlog 6 Summit was a BLAST!

I had way too much fun talking in front of a whole auditorium of new and veteran bloggers. I was asked to speak about Video Blogging 101. So pretty much the basics of Video Blogging. I of course, added a little twist to this and titled my talk: “Are you Sexy Enough to be a Video Blogger?”

The video will be out soon and I’ll post links to that. You can see some notes from that talk, that were featured in the iBlog6 “Digit@l Magazine” here – “Are you Sexy Enough for Video Blogging?”

Anyway, I just wanted to share some links, insights and pictures from some bloggers I found who were there to see my talk. Hopefully they liked it and hopefully they learned something cool from it. If anything, I’m hopeful people do know that they ARE sexy enough to be a video blogger!

VIDEO BLOGGING

I’ve been really planning to make my own channel in YouTube. Although I have one, it only contains my college video projects. It was until yesterday that I realized how video blogging is important to a blogger like me.

The fun video blogging lessons were presented by Vince G. (I’m sorry I forgot the last name). He’s a DJ at Mellow 94.7 (yeah! I listen to that radio station). According to DJ Vince (http://wheninmanila.com) video blogging doubles the power of your blog. I think he made his point. Video can be present in your blog as well as other platforms like YouTube, Vimeo and Veoh. Actually, if you put your videos to these three platforms it doesn’t just double your blogging power but it’s four times better than just publishing an article in your WordPress or Blogger site.

I like it when he said: “It’s not about who you know, it’s about who knows you.” Now that’s one rocking statement! It can somehow be associated to being famous. He showed us some clips on YouTube about famous video bloggers/personalities. He showed us “David After Dentist”, which I couldn’t believe that I never heard or watched before. It was really funny!

Because of that, I got more inspired to make my YouTube channel active. I also have a channel in Vimeo (search for Sai Verano) but I haven’t uploaded any video yet. It’s a channel for business tips and principles.

Ishmael Fischer Ahab of http://theparadoxicleyline.blogspot.com had a quick comment about my presentation:

Vince Golangco’s presentation on video blogging opened up some ideas in my mind. If I will pursue video blogging in the future, his tips and tricks will be definitely useful.

Notes
I am expecting a lot of people to come in a few hours. Morning sessions of iBlog6 usually doesn’t fill up Malcolm. Many bloggers (prominent ones) will probably arrive this afternoon. And this hall will be jamapacked.

Vince Golangco is very entertaining. I like it that we are learning something while he makes really good jokes! Its an entertaining presentation. He shows videos and funny clips and still makes a point.

Oh and got cool comments from that blog post at inghinyero.com too

Are you Sexy Enough to be a Video Blogger? (how to Vlog)

I spoke today at the iBlog 6 Summit (iBlog6) held at the University of the Philippines.

My topic was Video Blogging 101 with my own little twist. I titled my segment, “Are you Sexy Enough to be a Video Blogger?” and talked about why people should start a video blog, the power a video blog carries and what it can do for you. I then also spoke about common excuses that people give regarding why they don’t want to start a video blog.

Below is my supporting article to my presentation that appeared in the UP Law Center’s Internet and Society Program “Digit@l” Magazine Volume 9 Issue 1.

Are you Sexy Enough for Video Blogging?
By: Vince Golangco

Long before you and I were around, our great great great great grandfathers used to live by the saying that goes: “It’s all about what you know!” So they poured their blood, sweat and tears into working 12 hours a day and learning a craft to the point where they were better than everyone else. The problem with this concept is that you can be the very BEST at one thing, but if no one knows you’re the best, then you won’t really get much work.

From that splendid point of view came the old saying our great great grandfathers then lived by, that went: “It’s not about what you know, it’s all about who you know!” This concept of course came to life at the dawn of the marketing and advertising era. It was about making connections and seeking them when you need help. It’s a very basic premise that is still used a lot here in the Philippines, especially in politics (that’s a semi-joke). Knowing someone always ensured you could ask for help when you needed it. The problem was that your ask-for-help currency is usually limited. You can only ask for so many favors and people can only do so much for you.

What would be more beneficial to all parties would be you helping other people to find you, when they need you. Help them help you. Thus, in today’s new marketplace and new globalized culture, the new and most effective way of life goes as:

“It’s not about what you know or who you know, it’s all about WHO KNOWS YOU!”

If Big Widget Making Company needed to get someone to make their new widget, and they somehow heard about your excellent widget making skills, they would surely approach you to seek your guidance. If this said Big Widget Making Company need someone to market their new widget, and they somehow heard about your excellent widget marketing skills… well you get the point.

With the internet, we’re each able to promote our own personal brands and inform others about our personal expertise. The person who better markets themselves and promotes their brand will, more often, get the job. This person will get the job even though there may be others more skilled or qualified than he is. But don’t hate the playah’… hate the game.

Blogging and video blogging are some of the most powerful tools to get your name out there.

What’s the difference between a blog and a video blog? Well, it’s pretty simple; video blogging, or vlogging, is twice as powerful as regular blogging.

First of all, a vlog allows for more avenues to publish your work. You’re able to re-post your creative products on other sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, TwitVid and more. Furthermore, most blogs do not do a good job of putting a face on the writer. Have you ever tried remembering a name without a face? It’s much more difficult to remember someone if you can’t recall what they look like. So not adding a logo, or your face, to your blog and brand is a malpractice that most people overlook.

The best practice I’ve seen with vlogs is still having the blog aspect to your post, but having a video that compliments your article. Having the written part helps you with the Search Engine Optimization (SEO), while also giving more depth to your post. What vlogs have though that regular blogs don’t is the ability to feed the need of people to watch TV, or something like TV. Moreover, videos help you feature so much more about your topic that regular words or pictures simply can’t capture.

When I founded WhenInManila.com, I knew from the start that a travel site featuring the Philippines would not be justified with just stories and photos. I knew that this country had way too much splendor to encapsulate into just letters and static images. There was no question that creating a video channel was the best way to properly build this site. The traffic and positive response we’ve gotten as of today is just a small testament of the power of  video blogs.

You’ve most likely heard about internet sensations turning into global celebrities such as Charice Pempengco or Arnel Pineda. Both starting out as no more than YouTube video diary producers but are now international talents. These two individuals did no more than just post videos of their singing expertise.

Now instead of giving you more reasons why you should start a video blog, I’m instead going to give you the most common reasons why people haven’t already started a vlog and also the rebuttal I have for these initial mis-thoughts:

  • “I’m shy”

Let me share a secret with you – Some of the most successful, most popular, and seemingly most outgoing “celebrities” are actually some of the shyest and most bashful people in the world. Being shy is a normal part of being human. Many people are able to overcome this simply by ignoring their internal thoughts or by excessive practice of pretending not to be shy. The secret is that everyone has some level of bashfulness that comes from the basic human need of being accepted. In fact, sometimes the limelight triggers this need for acceptance even more and some people who get thrown into this popularity pool have no idea how to handle all the attention. They eventually start craving the positive attention and slowly start needing more of it to feed and counter their shyness. I constantly recall a friend of mine, named Pam, who’s a professional model. She once told me that she hates dating other models because models are very needy. She said that most other models need you to constantly remind them of how cool, sexy and special they are, or think they are. They need the constant ego boost in order to maintain their level of “unshyness” in order to properly perform their job. They may do a good job at hiding how shy they really are, but the bottom line is that they’re just as introverted as you are, but the difference is that they found a way to overcome this. So if you want to take your brand, or yourself to the next level, then you need to find your own way of overcoming this internal block. Start by contemplating this statement: “Fake it til’ you make it!” Now STOP, and think about it.

  • “I don’t look good on camera” / “I’m not sexy enough to be a video blogger”

This fruitless thought is yet another angle of the shy syndrome that we all need to overcome. We’re fed lies everyday by the television and beauty magazines. They dictate to us the need for excessive make-up and photoshopping skills in order to look like what the ad agencies and big corporations think we should look like. This is a trap that we should not fall into:

“Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.”  – Steve Jobs, Apple CEO

It’s a new world and the dawn of social media has moved the control of what we think is beautiful from the advertising agencies to the end users. No longer is this an era of supermodels with fake tans and breast implants. Today’s Web 2.0 world dictates that the normal people are the more beautiful specimens. It’s all about what’s real today. Believe me, you are more beautiful and more real than half the fakers on TV today.  Now you just need to adjust your own self to think the same way.

  • “I don’t think I have anything significant to say or share”

Are you religious? Do you believe in women’s rights? Who do you think will be the best president for our country? Do you like cats?

You do have an opinion and you do have something significant to say. Having an opinion of something does not mean you have to be a certified expert in that field. It’s just what it is, an opinion. There is no need for a degree in law or political science to share your opinion on who you think will be the best president for the country. You can vote for whoever you want and have your own thoughts on why this is so. Some people will think you are an absolute idiot for thinking one way, while other will also think that you are an absolute genius for thinking the same exact thoughts. So just say it as it is. Get a camera and let people know what you think. Don’t expect everyone to agree with it. It’s actually a good thing if some people disagree with you. It means you have a good point. It means you’re challenging things. It means you are a leader. Good leaders are the ones who always challenge the status quo. Be that leader!

  • “I don’t have the tools to create videos” / “My camera is not the High Definition / Blue Ray quality that’s needed for online videos”

When I first started my vlog, WhenInManila.com, I thought I needed the best quality cameras and the best equipment known to man. It wasn’t long before I realized that the internet does not have such stringent entrance fees as I thought it would. This is one club that lets everyone in. This is not to say that you should produce material of low quality, instead it just means that sometimes, real videos that are less fabricated and more personal are more appreciated online. So that means cell phone cameras and digicams work just as well, if not better for the YouTube community.  You don’t need an entire production crew. It’s all about producing quality content with the tools you already have. iPods, digital cameras, your phones and even webcams are more than enough to get you started. Worry about content rather than equipment.

  • “I don’t know how to edit a video”

I live by this quote that says: “The man who says ‘I CAN’ and the man that says ‘I CAN’T’ are both right. Which one are you?”

So it all starts with the right attitude. If you’re willing to learn, then I guarantee that you will. In fact, video editing (like so many other things in life) is much easier than you may think. I still use the basic program for most of my video editing needs. You can actually download it for free, just search for “Windows Live Movie Maker.” It’s is the bare necessity / basic video editing program that will not leave you confused like a grandma on Facebook. There aren’t too many options or buttons but it still has more than enough to get you going. You can cut, paste, add videos, add pictures, add music and even put a watermark. It should take you no more than a few tries at this to be an expert at editing videos with this program. All it takes is the right attitude and the initiative to do so.

  • “No one will watch me anyway”

Well what do you have to lose? It may take some time but if you do put out anything with decent quality, you’ll start finding your niche and you’ll start getting the support you need. It’s no secret that every blogger, video blogger, or TV star started out with one fan – their mom. Though with the right marketing tactics and persistence, all these people start building an audience of people who appreciate them for who they are and what they do. You don’t need to have any super talents. Sometimes, people appreciate you for exactly what you can bring to the table. In fact, this sometimes makes people more attracted to you as they feel like they can connect with you. They end up feeling just as simple as you are and thus they appreciate you for what you have to say, no matter how insignificant you may think it is (refer back to advice on you thinking that you don’t have anything significant to say or share).

The relatively low cost of starting an online channel has made video production much easier. In fact, marketers and bloggers today like going by the phrase: “Ready, Fire, Aim.” It’s a statement that means you can adjust your content toward your audience. Just get started with what you have in mind and worry about adjusting and tweaking it as you go along. It won’t cost you anything anyway. Go ahead, fire when ready!

  • “People might say mean things about me and my videos”

Yes they will. I won’t lie, there are a lot of “haters” out there who do nothing but try to drag people down. The one piece of advice I remember from Filipino internet sensation Christina Gambito, better known as HappySlip, was that you need to ignore all the negative comments and downbeat people. They will be out there and you just need to do your best to produce what you feel is quality videos and content. The rest will fall into place on its own.

Most are hindered from starting a vlog simply by their own selves. Well, it’s time to overcome your personal walls and turn yourself into the next internet video producer. With the right attitude and some practice, you’ll be the next video star faster than you can say “YouTube Sensation!”

Believe me, it’s a lot easier than you think.

“The greater danger for most of us, is not that our aim is too high and we miss it,
but that it is too low and we reach it”
