2010 was a weird year for search in the Philippines. I wouldn’t really have said that, but considering the number one searched item on Google in 2010 for the Philippines is the word “jejemon,” I’m now starting to believe that the end of the world is very near.

The 2010 Google Zeitgeist top trends for the Philippines is all about triumphs, from the success of the 2010 automated elections and the election of a new president in Noynoy Aquino, to Manny Pacquiao’s back-to-back victories against Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. Venus Raj, 4th runner up in this year’s Miss Universe Pageant, snatched #2 on our list of fastest rising local newsmakers, and Charice, fresh off her Glee appearance, is this year’s fastest rising local music artist.

New Sun Life Piolo Pascual Planner

Just wanted to thank Sun Life Financial for sharing with me their new life planners. This is a new collaborative planner with Piolo Pascual called the SunPIOLOgy planner!

EDUCATION and the environment take center stage in SunPIOLOgy 2011: The Pursuits Journal which was officially launched on November 25 in Eastwood Mall and Fully Booked at Fort Bonifaco High Street. Pulag to the breathtaking depths of Palawan, he captured nature in its solemn and reflective designs. Marvel at the full circle rainbow in historic Siem Reap in Cambodia, or water buffalos as they cross a plain full of ash in Zambales.

Divided into four themes – air, fire, earth, and water – the Pursuits Journal sets a colorful tone for the new year. In between its pages, one can learn about environmental conservation through eco-friendly tips and advice. Delight in the wealth of photos included in today’s hot new planner, and take comfort in the fact that you are also helping to ensure a bright future for Hebreo beneficiaries.

Be a green advocate

Come 2011, Sun Life Financial-Philippines will move to its new home called the Sun Life Centre. As the first green commercial building in the country, it is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council on the basis of energy efficiency and use of sustainable materials.

So excited to share this news bit with everyone. I was able to get a sneak peak of who the new ambassador is for Coke Zero!

It’s extra exciting to find out how very talented and beautiful their new ambassador is. I mean really, she’s not just another pretty face! She’s also one who has built quite a reputation thanks to her skills and talents.

This stunning and beautiful lady I’m talking about is already and accomplished assistant designer to one of the country’s giant fashion retailers. Moreover, she’s also a professional make-up artist, commercial model and singer. And just when you think you’ve got her all figured out, she surprises you once more with yet another passion – healthy lifestyle with boxing.

Furthermore, she’s clinched a record deal with MCA Universal andhas also signed with Regal Films. So looks like we’ll be seeing a lot from her this coming 2011.

The lady I’m talking about, who’s the new ambassador for Coke Zero, is the beautiful Solenn Heusaff!

Solenn Heusaff is one woman not afraid to pursue her passions and maintain an active and fit lifestyle. Much like Coke Zero does for you!

It’s a re-release of the Jordan 11 shoe from Nike / Jumpman brand line. It was definitely a hit back in the day. The new Jordan Cool Greys 11 feature the signature grey shoes but this time with the baby blue soles that makes these Cool Greys 11 so much cooler!

How to Have a Good Night Sleep: Healthy Sleeping Tips from Sleepasil

I wanted to thank Sleepasil for sending over the sleep care package! I’ve already been using the items to get me some much needed rest! The scented oil is making my pimp pad much more pleasing to the nose while the little pillows are great for a quick power nap in the car.

I also tried out the Sleepasil tablets and I really did have a great sleep. I usually toss and turn and wake up at least once, if not more, in the middle of the night. After taking the Sleepasil tablets I slept completely throughout the night!

All I can say is that I thought Christmas Family Cards should have the entire family there. First of all, Ryan Secrest isn’t even there! Still not sure why Ryan Secrest was there last year, but either way, he’s family now. Second, there’s NO ONE else on this card! All I see is Kim Kardashian in a tight, skintight, long sleeve white gown that’s totally showing off her assets…. I don’t see anyone else on this card!

Christmas is Overrated: Holiday Thoughts from a Scrooged Grinch

This was a post by a very good friend of mine a few years back. Just thought it was hella funny and really well written. So I wanted to share it with you guys in case you want to check it out.

Hate is a strong word…but I can really give an E. Coli’s ass about Christmas

Christmas is a religious holiday. I have no desire to celebrate anything remotely related to support it. Growing up, I was never taught to believe in any fairytale or imaginative figures. Thus the thought of an overweight old man dressed in red flannel, shouts derogatory terms across the sky about women and distributes toys to undeserving little brats does not arouse me in any shape or form.

Nevertheless, being the accommodating person that I am, I concede and cooperate with the traditions instead of telling my true feelings to people’s faces. That’s the essence of being civil. If someone has the nerve to tell me that Chinese New Year is a meaningless holiday that promotes nothing but commercialism and compulsive spending, I will slap that bitch so hard there will be no tomorrow.

The funny thing is, I just spent the evening watching two things I can’t stand the most: fireworks and Christmas decorations.

The only description I got from my friend Ricky about this event was “there will be these sail boats with cool lights at Shelter Island.” I thought it would be a relaxing way to wrap up my Sunday, which I spent compulsively rearranging living room furniture.

“Yes!! We arrived just in time for the fireworks” was the first thing that came out of his mouth when we pulled up.

Fireworks? I hate fireworks. It is the ultimate ancient Chinese invention that is used for useless ephemeral human enjoyment at the expense of our dying planet. The only time one is ever justified to use fireworks is when you’re surrounded by hungry mountain lions while wearing underwear made out of beef jerky, and you cannot possibly attract any help by screaming “fire!”

The best part about the night was that the “lights on the sail boats” were actually “illuminated Christmas decorations”. Jingles were blasted so loudly they still resonate in my ears…after 7 hours.

Every boat pretty much looked the same. Why couldn’t people just be a little more creative. If I had a boat there I would have decorated it with the devil riding with Santa, or a giant hiny.

Ricky did not notice how painful it was for me to watch. I squirmed so much on my riverbank rock I was pretty sure I drilled a hole into it.

Ahh…I’m such a good friend…

Art and Passion at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Passionfest

My favorite city in the Philippines is helping you guys discover how special it really is!

BGC is already one of my favorite places to hang out at. It’s safe, clean, fun and now, filled with awesome artworks and lights to make the holidays more festive.

Come to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) this holiday season for their “Passionfest Holidays” and truly see what this emerging community is all about!

I want to thank the BGC team for showing me around their side of town. You too can experience this free guided tour! It’s the BGC Fun Tour!

The BGC Fun Tour lets YOU experience the season through Bonifacio Global City’s art pieces and holiday installations with onboard entertainment by The Spit (Silly People’s Improv Theater) Group.

You’ll get some fun on board entertainment while also learning a little bit about Bonifacio Global City and the art around BGC.

SPIT is sort of like that TV show called “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” where you have these impromptu comedians who make skits, songs and jokes on the spot based on their interaction and suggestions of the crows. So anything goes and every performance is definitely one of a kind!

All you have to do is get your FREE tickets from the Bonifacio High Street Concierge or be at Bonifacio High Street 30 minutes before the departure of the bus, at B8, near Coffee Bean on Dec 18-19, every hour from 6pm-9pm.

Here’s some of the cool sites I got to see on the BGC Fun Tour:

All the trellises in Bonifacio High Street are adorned with colorful LED lights that flickers to the tune of Christmas carols. Add a sentence here which lets the reader know what you thought of the lights or how it made you feel.

The theme of the Christmas installations around the BGC is “Parol,” which is an ornamental star-like lantern popular in Philippine culture. They were traditionally made out of native materials and used by farmers to light their way as they went to the night masses (simbang gabi) which is another tradition in the Philippines for the Christmas season.

There are many different “Parols” scattered around the city. The installations featured not the usual parols but a more contemporary and artsy rendition.

BGC’s 60-foot Christmas Tree at the corner of 26th St. and 5th Ave. Along with the other artistic renditions of the “Parol.”

TRANSFORMATION by LOR CALMA

Along the corner of 32^nd Street and 5^th Avenue stands a very majestic piece that illuminates the busy street corner. It’s multi colored lighting and cascading water again reminds you that the artistic talents of Filipinos are definitely world class! The three pillars of this piece, said to represent the three major island groups of the Philippines, can really inspire viewers to feel the possibilities that we too can achieve.

Christmas Donation Drive: Haven for the Elderly

Christmas is the time for giving.

Though many of us often get overwhelmed with happiness from all the gifts we receive, we must remember that giving is what this season should really be for.

Sharing your blessings with those less fortunate could be the best Christmas gift you could give yourself. Goodness has a way of coming back to you ten fold.

This Christmans, WhenInManila.com is helping out ActivAsia Inc., a Media and Channel Activation agency to give some help to those who need it the most. This year, for our annual Christmas Outreach Project: “Masayang Pasko nila Lola’t Lolo”, we have tied up with Haven for the Elderly formerly known as Golden Acres so that gift and cash donations can be solicited on their behalf.

You too can become a big part of this project and make Christmas a truly merry one for all the Lolo’s and the Lola’s who have been abandoned at the Haven for the Elderly.

Donation boxes will be placed in front of major toll plazas, toll booths and in the Skyway Customer service centers along the South Luzon Expressway to collect donations from Skyway motorists such as clothes, medicines, soap, sleeping mats, cleaning materials and other items for the residents of Haven for the Elderly.

A Giant Christmas Tree lighting event along the Sucat Southbound Exhibit Area was held to kick-off the donation drive last November 29. During the turnover of the donations, we will be holding a simple Christmas Get-Together on December 15, 2010 with the residents at the Haven for the Elderly home in Quezon City.

We encourage donations (old clothes, sleeping mats, blankets, soaps, etc.) for “Haven for the Elderly” from readers/followers of WhenInManila.com starting November 29 to December 13, 2010. Donation drop boxes can be found at the following tollbooths, toll plazas and customer service centers:
