Fact or Fiction

If you pluck your hair, more grows back.

FICTION

On an episode of Sex and the City, or “The Show That was Great Before the Second Sequel,” Samantha is upset over a grey hair. She goes to pluck it but decides against it. As she tells our heroine Carrie Bradshaw, “If you pluck it, ten more will come to its funeral.”– is Samantha’s anxiety based in truth?

No, no, and more no, according to experts. When your shaved hair grows back, it is initially short and stubbly. The longer hair is, the softer it becomes. So while it may seem like the gods are punishing you for taking a razor to unwanted hair – it’s really just the biology of your body

Fact or Fiction

You will ruin your eyes reading in dim light.

FICTION!!!!

But reading in dim light can certainly strain your eyes – it’s just that those itchy, burning tired eyes will restore themselves. No permanent damage is possible.

When you walk into a room where light is low, your eye adjusts in several ways. When you read, your eye must be able to focus an image of the words onto your retina. To do this, the iris, as well as the muscles that control the shape of your lens, must contract to keep the focused image on the retina.

If you read in low light, your visual muscles get mixed signals: Relax to collect the most light, but at the same time, contract to maintain the focused image. When that object is poorly lit, focusing becomes even more difficult because the contrast between the words and the page isn’t as great, which decreases the eye’s ability to distinguish visual detail. That ability is called visual acuity. Your eyes have to work harder to separate the words from the page, which strains your eye muscles.

When your eyes are working this hard for a long period of time, they become tired, much as any muscle would. The strain may result in a number of physical effects including sore or itching eyeballs, headaches, back and neck aches and blurred vision. Because you often don’t blink enough when focusing on a single object, you may also experience uncomfortable dryness in your eyes. None of these symptoms damage your eyes, and they eventually go away. If the symptoms don’t go away once you stop straining your eyes, however, then see an eye doctor. You may have an underlying eye problem like nearsightedness; the fact that the symptoms of eye strain overlap with those of nearsightedness is likely a reason why some continue to argue that reading in dim light causes permanent damage.

For now, it seems, the eyesight of children who read by flashlight is safe. Still, it’s certainly easier on your eyes to read in good light that falls directly on the page without causing a glare. You can also avoid eye strain when you’re reading by blinking frequently and taking a moment to focus on something out the window or across the room every 15 to 30 minutes.

The tobacco industry was one of the first to advertise on television.  Phillip Morris’ campaign for their Marlboro brand of cigarettes – depicting a rugged cowboy known as the “Marlboro Man” – was one of the most successful and long running.  Conceived in 1954, the campaign ran until cigarette advertising was banned from TV in January 1971 – and continued in print for many more years.  During that time, several different men portrayed the Marlboro Man, two of whom died of lung cancer.   David McLean, who appeared in TV and print ads starting in the early ’60s, died in October 1995 at age 73.  Wayne McLaren, who posed for print ads in the ’70s, died in July 1992 at age 51.

Fact or Fiction

If you are attacked by a shark, you should punch it in the nose as hard as you can.

FICTION

While this strategy has worked for a lucky few, it is not one that is recommended by shark experts.  Most marine biologists advise that you not do anything that might agitate or injure the shark, as that could make it more aggressive or attract other sharks to the area.  If you do feel threatened, use a stick or other tool — rather than your hands — to fend it off, and poke it in the eyes or gills instead of the nose.

Actually, this widespread misconception about how to fend off a shark attack has even spawned a joke:

“Marine biology researchers have developed a new method to fend off shark attacks. If you are diving and are approached by a shark, they recommend that you swim toward it aggressively and punch it in the nose as hard as possible.

If this doesn’t work, beat the shark with your stump.”

-Differentiating Heat Exhaustion from Heat Stroke from Heat Cramps (commonly seen in most outdoor sports like running and cycling)

and how to treat them

-The above might be a great segue to addressing dehydration and maintaining water-electrolyte balance–this is if your other guest, Noelle, doesn’t cover this in her running topic

-The importance of stretching and which type comes first- dynamic or static stretching before working out or doing sports

-Treating sprains and strains and the importance of P.R.I.C.E.

-How to treat “Epistaxis” aka “nosebleed”

-What to do during when someone gets struck by lightning (sounds silly but it could actually happen)

World’s Most Prolific Mother (69 babies)

Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782), was a peasant from Shuya, Russia. Though not noteworthy himself, his first wife, Valentina Vassilyeva, set the record for most children birthed by a single woman. She gave birth to total of 69 children; however, few other details are known of her life, such as her date of birth or death. She gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 births. 67 of the 69 children born survived infancy. The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Now in her mid-sixties, she claims to be the mother of 64 children. Of these, 55 are documented. The mother with the greatest number of kids that are not tiwns is Livia Ionce. This Romanian woman, 44, gave birth to her 18th child in Canada in 2008.

Fact or Fiction

A hairy swimmer will be slower in the water than a clean shaven swimmer.

FACT

It’s an idea as slick as sea creatures: Could hair slow a swimmer’s pace? A 1988 study supported the athletic benefits of being hairless. For swimmers, removing body hair decreases drag while moving through the water.

This means swimmers who get friendly with a razor before each race go farther and faster with each stroke..

World’s Largest Penis – 13.5 in

World’s Largest Vagina – 19 in

The Largest Vagina most likely belonged to Scottish giantess Anna Swan (1846-1888), a remarkable woman who set a number of records relating to her bulk. Born normally sized, she began growing at a prodigious rate in childhood, finally reaching a maximum height of 7′ 8″ at age 19. Capitalizing on her huge size, she joined a side show and toured the country, where she met and fell in love with Captain Martin Bates, another giant who measured over 7 feet tall. They wed in 1872, making them the tallest married couple in the world, a record that still stands today. The couple settled down into married life, built a mansion filled with enormous furniture, including an 11′ by 7′ bed where they consummated their union. On June 18, 1879, she gave birth to the largest baby in history, weighing 26 lbs. and 34 inches in length—so large, in fact, that it became tightly wedged in her capacious tract, only extricated by the use of forceps and belts. The child did not survive the rigors of birth, but a cast was made, still on display at the Cleveland Museum of Health. Generally the largest part of an infant is the head. We know that the tyke’s cranium measured about 19 inches (48cm) in circumference, hence we compute the minimum dilation of Swan’s passage as 6 inches, or just over 15 cm. That’s pretty wide—the normal dilation for childbirth is 10 cm.

Fact or Fiction

The Jamaican bobsled team placed ahead of the United States team in the 1994 Winter Olympics.

FACT

When the Jamaican bobsled team made their debut at the 1988 winter Olympics in Calgary, many people thought it was a joke.  How could a team from a country where it never snows compete in the winter games?  While the team came in dead last, they attracted so much attention that Disney made a movie about them.  They continued to train, and at the 1994 winter games in Lillehammer, Norway, they placed 14th in the four-man bobsled competition, ahead of teams from the United States, Russia and France.

World’s Largest Penis – 13.5 in

The official rank of the largest penis belongs to a man measured and documented by Dr. Robert Dickinson in the earlier part of the twentieth century. This record-holding penis was 13.5 inches (34 cm) in length and 6.25 inches (16 cm) in circumference.

And  the living owner of the world’s biggest human penis is Jonah Falcon. Falcon’s 13-5 inch member has been measured for a TV special, making him one of the few guys who can back up his bodily boasts.

Fact or Fiction

A man died after playing video games for more than 24 hours non-stop

FACT

in fact, several men have died after marathon video-game sessions, particularly in 24-hour cybercafes that are popular gaming venues in Asian countries. In South Korea, a 24-year-old man died of exhaustion after playing for 86 straight hours in 2002; and a 28-year-old man who had recently lost his job because he spent too much time playing Starcraft died of heart failure in 2005 after a 50-hour session. A 27-year-old Taiwanese man reportedly passed away in 2002 after playing video games for 32 hours, and in 2007, a man fainted in a Chinese cybercafes after three straight days of gaming. Perhaps these cybercafes should impose time limits.

Grandparents Day – September, first Sunday after Labor Day

Grandparents’ Day is a far more recent invention than Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. It was fostered by Marion McQuade, and a presidential proclamation on September 6, 1979, made it official. It is observed throughout the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day, except in Massachusetts, where it is observed on the first Sunday in October.

There are a number of ways in which grandparents can be honored and their day celebrated. One is to invite real or “adopted” grandparents to school for the day, where they participate in their grandchildren’s classes or special assembly programs. Gift giving is not as widespread on this day as it is on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

Video Games Day

Sept 12. A day for kids who love video games to celebrate the fun they have playing them and to thank their parents for all the cartridges and quarters they have provided to indulge this enthusiasm.

Fact or Fiction

You get infected with sore eyes if you stare at someone already infected directly in the eye.

FICTION

This is a myth which very popular in the Philippines. But in reality it is not the looking at the eyes of the infected person that gets you the sore eyes. When you are somewhere near a person with sore eyes, you are likely touching the surfaces that he/she already touched.

Involuntarily you also touch your eyes which eventually give you the same infection. It was misconstrued then that just by looking at the eyes of the infected can get you infected but in reality it is the unforeseen incidents that occurs before and after the looking at the eyes of the infected person. .

Fact or Fiction

If you want to stay healthy and properly hydrated, you must drink eight glasses of water per day.

FICTION

While it’s a good idea to drink plenty of water, there is no scientific or medical basis for the specific amount of eight glasses per day. Water-intake needs vary from person to person, depending on age, size and amount of physical activity. We also get a fair amount of water through the foods we eat and from other beverages, so it’s not always necessary to get all our fluid from drinking water.

Sufficiently Big Melons Can Keep You Out of Prison

You would think that the only way breasts could keep anyone from doing jail-time is if that person went back to the judge’s chambers and let him touch them for a couple of minutes. But luckily there are less sad examples of the twins providing legal representation in court, as was the case with Serena Kozakura.

In 2007 Serena Kozakura, 38, was convicted of property destruction after she allegedly kicked in the wooden doors to an unnamed man’s apartment and trashed it to hell. However, during a reenactment of the crime, Kozakura proved that the hole someone made in the door was way too small for her and her impressive 44-inch chest to crawl through.

Based on just that, the woman was acquitted. It’s probably safe to say she will never curse her massive knockers ever again after it turned out they are her own personal pair of top notch defense lawyers. Oh breasts, is there anything you cannot do?

Fact or Fiction

You can pop popcorn using cell-phone radiation.

FICTION

You may have seen video clips showing an array of cell phones surrounding a pile of popcorn kernels. When the phones are used to call one another, the resulting “radiation” causes the popcorn to pop.  Don’t bother trying this at home — it’s not possible to pop corn (or cook an egg) with cell phones.

These videos are part of a viral marketing campaign for a company that sells phone accessories. Using careful editing and low-budget special effects, they mimic the appearance of popping corn by dropping pre-popped popcorn onto the table while the unpopped kernels are digitally removed.

Moment of Zen

Every day in Africa a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better be running.

Hooters Are Getting Huger

A few years ago some UK researchers turned to the world and said “We have good news and we have better news”. The good news was that someone actually gave them money to study boob sizes around the world. The better news was that their findings showed that, worldwide, breasts are getting bigger and bigger.

Just in the UK alone, the average bra size had gone up from 34B to a way juicier 36C. As for the rest of the world, breast sizes had been continuously going up for the last 10-15 years, averaging now almost an entire cup bigger than just a decade ago. If this trend continues, someday we might actually need an M-cup bra size.

Plastic surgeries must have some part in this, but diet and lifestyles cannot be ignored. We definitely eat more and exercise less now, and all that fat has to go somewhere – the fact that it seems to be going mainly to breasts is the best evidence that God exists and that he loves us.

Fact or Fiction

Adding baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to Mountain Dew will cause it to glow in the dark.

FICTION

Despite what you may have seen on YouTube, adding baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to a bottle of Mountain Dew will not make it glow in the dark. These videos are a hoax — something else is either added to the bottle off-camera (such as the contents of a glow stick), or careful editing allows the bottle to be substituted for another with glowing contents. In any case, if you try this at home, you’ll be sorely disappointed with the results.

Fact or Fiction

The actor who portrayed the “Marlboro Man” in TV and print ads for cigarettes died of lung cancer.

FACT

Breasts Can Become Bigger Via a Cellphone Ringtone

Speaking of smaller breasts from East Asia, it somehow seems appropriate that the inventor of the first noninvasive breast augmentation procedure that probably works, hails from Japan. For a number of years now Dr. Hideto Tomabechi has been preoccupied with 2 things: sounds and breasts, and in 2008 he combined his 2 passions into the “Rock Melon” – a ringtone which supposedly causes titties to gain in size if you just listen to it.

Dr. Tomabechi has designed the “Rock Melon” sound to carry with it a subliminal cry of an infant child, which allegedly works on a woman’s brain causing it to instinctively switch to motherhood mode, making her chest jugs fill with milk. After listening to the tone 20 times a day for a couple of days, one of the good doctor’s test subjects reported her breasts grew in size by almost an entire inch!

The only question that remains is: why aren’t we feeding this sound through every loudspeaker in the country?

Fact or Fiction

If you sit too close to the TV, you will ruin your eyes.

FICTION

YOU’RE CORRECT!  The correct answer is FALSE.  There have been no scientific studies linking television watching and damaged vision.  Sitting too close to the TV or watching in a dark room can cause eye fatigue, but not permanent damage.  Eye doctors recommend sitting at least 5 feet from the TV and keeping a dim light on in the room.

Fact or Fiction

The worm in a bottle of Mexican tequila is an aphrodisiac or hallucinogen.

FICTION

First of all, there are no worms in tequila bottles from Mexico. It is a similar spirit, mescal, that contains the legendary worm. Mescal is distilled from the fermented sap of the agave plant, which also happens to host the gusan rojo worm, which is actually a butterfly larva.

When entrepreneur Jacobo Lozano Páez started bottling mescal in the 1950s, he noticed that these worms inevitably ended up in the mix, and gave the liquor a distinctive flavor. Rather than attempt to filter them out, Páez embraced the worm as an ingredient and came up with the marketing gimmick of including a whole worm in each bottle.

The worms are now raised on farms solely for this purpose, but they are just worms. While they are perfectly harmless to eat — if one is so inclined — they do not have any hallucinogenic or aphrodisiac properties.

Happiness

Moment of Zen

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”  – Paulo Coelho quote
