Today is Cam Whore Day!!!

WOW! That was an awesome show today! Thanks to everyone who kept me company! Keisha, Lyn, Carl, Regina, Sharon, Xian, Jersey, Marie, Harris, Eudora, Rhein, Leo, Red, Secretlover, Dhea, Marrie and everyone else whom I wasn’t able to list down!

As mentioned, today is my self-proclaimed “Cam-Whore Day” because today was the day, in 1959, that the first picture of Earth from space was seen. So with that, you need to take pictures of yourself! Share them with me if you want and I’ll post them here if you want as well. Email me – djVinceG@Yahoo.com

Breasts implants can also save you from death

Big breasts miraculously saved an Israeli woman from death at the hands of a Lebanese paramilitary organization. The incident occurred during a Hezbollah rocket attack. The victim got a boob job two years ago. During the war, she was wounded in the chest by shrapnel but survived because of her implants. While the patient is fine, the implant, unfortunately, did not survive.

Fact or Fiction

You cannot open the door of a sinking car.

FICTION…. sorta

When a sinking car isn’t yet completely flooded, the water pressure differential between the inside and outside of the cabin prevents the door from being opened. Only once the sinking sedan is filled to the brim — and the pressure difference stabilized — will the door latch release.

Breasts get fat

In your 20s, your boobs are made up of fat, milk glands and collagen — the connective tissue that keeps them firm. But as you age, the glands and collagen shrink and are replaced by more and more fat. Instead of making your bra size go up, however, the added flab can send breasts down, closer to the floor, if you catch our drift

Fact or Fiction

Lightning can crash an airplane

FACT

On average, every airplane is struck by lightning at least once per year. But don’t let that statistic deter you from flying. While lightning used to be a real threat to airline safety at the turn of the century, planes today are better engineered to not conduct electricity and to channel any energy from a lightning strike away from the plane.

That said, there’s still a very slight chance that lightning could bring a plane down, but the last time that happened was in 1963.

How to Make Your Social Network WORK for You

WOW! My guest for my segment “Edumacate Me!” really prepared a lot of stuff for us!

“Edumacate Me!” is a segment that’s part of the radio show called “The G-Spot” w/ DJ Vince G where we try to learn something new every Sunday from the guests that come on air with us at Mellow 94.7

My guest this week is Ms. Carissa Villacorta, the author of the book called “Surreality” and one of the Top 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the US.

Carissa Villacorta talking points for Mellow 94.7 guesting with DJ Vince G

TALK TOPIC:

How To Make Your Social Network Work For You (and everyone else)

We always hear about

Intellectual Quotient

Emotional Quotient from a popular book

How about Social Quotient

How to grow in social intelligence

I feel that endorsements and interviews are the two top ways to get a job. So in a way, they’re results of people liking you enough to recommend you or hire you.

How to make the change from being socially inept to becoming socially adept

I am not claiming to be a teacher, as I myself am still a student of life and relationship building

I’ve realized that when I meet new people, I have a tendency to ask not only

How are you?

But also

“How can I help you?”

Though I don’t always say it aloud.

We all appreciate help. Whether in finding jobs, clients, baby sitters, PR opportunities, or making our dreams come true.

Everybody wants to be Cinderella, but they’re not always successful because they want it for themselves. My suggestion is that we all become Fairy Godmothers to each other –We can introduce them to prince charming, make them a dress and take them to the ball. Because only when we are all Fairy Godmothers to each other can we all become Cinderellas too – our dreams come true.

Noone is ever self-made. We are all products of the kindness and generosity of people we’ve met along the way.

And so you can never say thank you enough.

PR for me does not only stand for  public relations, but it means personal relations

You only have one chance to make an encounter count. People may not meet you ever again. Or you may not meet them ever again. So make the 10 minutes they choose to spend with you a positive and pleasant time.

It only takes a moment, to make, or break an impression.

•         A moment is a retail of time.
Make the moment count.

•         It’s not only about the peso counter, but also about the personal encounter
From the onstage impression to the offstage experience

MAKE THAT ENCOUNTER COUNT

Don’t give them a chance to say cute nga pero snob. The best thing people can say about you is “Gwapo na, mabait pa.” Or “Mabait na, guwapo pa.”

What’s the use of knowing a lot of people to look for a job if none of them want to help you? You know those people you don’t ever want to see again? You don’t want to be one of those people right?

George Washington said in his Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior from the 1700s

Everything done in company must be in consideration of everyone who is present

Always be considerate of people who are on the same room, same street, same country – people who are going to be affected, sometimes disturbed by what you do. Ask Is this right, is this decent, is this considerate?

==

HOW TO GROW IN SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE

Don’t drop names of people you don’t really know or don’t know you

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

It’s not who you know it’s who knows you.

It’s not who knows you, its who likes you.

Don’t overpromise. Don’t talk too much. Just do your best, pray for the rest and let the results do the talking.

Try not to backstab. You don’t want to see bloody backs everywhere right? You don’t want someone to have a bloody back. You don’t want a bloody back. So don’t stab people with sharp words, especially behind their backs.

Strive not to improve others, but to improve yourself in patience, tolerance and understanding.

Words can break relationships. Especially those you hear from other people.

Conversations are two-way dialogues. They’re not monologues. There was a guy I’ve hung out with thrice already  before he found out (from someone else) where I worked and what I do.  Then he seemed surprised. That’s because he never asked me.  He kept on talking about himself for hours on end. And I didn’t want to interrupt his monologue.

Here are the top recent realizations I have while learning about PR or what is commonly known as public relations, but what I call Person Relations

1. Showing up is the greatest compliment. Staying in touch is the second best compliment.

2. The 24-hour cancellation policy should apply not only in restaurant or hotel reservations but also in social commitments. It’s hard to book another guest, as much as it is to book a new appointment in your day.

3 It has always been my job / second nature to invite friends and strangers to events and goings on. But I only invite up to three times. Decline it, and you will not hear from me again. (Ping Pong)

4. Just say yes. I’m a yes girl. Yes to all invites, openings and opportunities. Let the wind take you to doors that open up for you. And some doors are opened up through invites.

5. I’m allergic to flakes. I hope noone lets it happen that they’re described as flakes. They’re people who say they’d come but actually don’t.

Inversely, I like it when people come on time – plus points for early. Reliability is key.

5.  Respect your word. I strive to live by ‘And the word was made flesh.’ They say ‘don’t say it if you don’t mean it.’ I say, don’t say it if you won’t do it. Make it real.

6. The easiest thing to do is to be happy for other people’s success. I don’t know why other people find it hard.

7. People must have a balance of confidence and humility. There are some who are painfully shy, and there are some who are PAINFULLY confident. Both are equally disturbing. Strike a balance and you won’t turn others away.

8. I don’t understand how people can make saying sorry a habit. How about not doing anything that requires an apology? And only say you’ll make it up if you really would.

Confident but not cocky. Cultured but not flashy.

Humility, gratitude, honesty, courtesy and genuine interest in others are still key.

Confident but not self-absorbed.
Well-bred but not flaunting.
Accomplished but not flashy.
Initiates but not flaky.
Humility and genuine interest in others are still key.

Rule of the world is give and take. We should all start in giving.

Start happy.

Live in peace.

Show up. Keep your word. And keep in touch.

I love socially adept people. They just know what to say, when to say it. How do they do it, and when did they learn it? Kudos to their parents!

Men can lactate too

It’s exceptionally rare, but since men possess mammary glands just like women do, they have the capacity to produce milk. When male lactation happens, it’s usually because of hormonal treatments for diseases like cancer.

Fact or Fiction

If a bullet is fired through the fuselage of a plane at altitude, it can cause explosive decompression and tear the plane apart…

FICTION

Despite what you may have seen in the movies, a bullet hole is too small to cause a commercial airliner to pop like a balloon. Even a hole the size of a window would not cause the plane to rip apart in midair. While there have been unfortunate instances of decompression where passengers were sucked out of a faulty door or window that blew out during a flight, the plane maintained its integrity and landed safely.

First Perfect Score in Olympic History

July 18, 1976. At the Montreal Olympics, Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci scored the first “10” in Olympic history with her flawless performance of the compulsory exercise on the uneven bars. The scoreboard displayed a “1.00” because it couldn’t go up to “10.” Comaneci had seven total perfect scores and won five medals, including the gold for all-around performance. Four months previous to the Olympics, Comaneci had earned the first perfect score in international gymnastics competition history.

Breasts are the first thing men notice in a woman

No news here. Research conducted at the Victoria University of Wellington showed that breasts are often the first thing men look at, and for a longer time than other body parts. Nothing to be ashamed since another study said that staring at women’s breasts for just minutes a day can improve a man’s health and add four to five years to his life.

Fact or Fiction

Cell phones are banned on planes because they might interfere with navigation instruments.

FICTION

Airplanes are specially insulated against foreign radio signals, and their communication and navigation instruments operate on different frequencies from cell phones. The Federal Communications Commission is actually the agency responsible for the ban, since the signals could potentially block telecommunication systems on the ground.

If someone makes a phone call from a plane, the signal would bounce across multiple cell towers at once, which could prevent other calls from going through. Yet some airlines in Europe, the Middle East and Asia have started allowing cell phone usage on flights.

World’s biggest boob job are a size 38KKK

In early 2009, Sheyla Hershey of Brazil was awarded the Guinness World Record for having the largest set of breasts. After nine surgeries and more than a gallon of silicone, her breasts are a size 38KKK.

Fact or Fiction

You get drunk faster in the air than on the ground.

FICTION

According to an old saying, one in the air is like three on the ground. That adage misses the mark though, because your blood alcohol level doesn’t actually change at a higher altitude as some think. With less oxygen reaching the brain because of the high altitude and the pressurized cabin, it might cause you to feel more intoxicated, but that’s about it.

Nevertheless, it probably isn’t a good idea to get hammered on a plane, if only out of courtesy to your neighbors.

Reason to party today – coz it’s happy hour somewhere in the world.

In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Filipino-American Friendship Day, July 4, is a day in the Philippines designated by President Diosdado Macapagal to commemorate the liberation of the country by joint Filipino and American forces from the Japanese occupation at the end of World War II.

Fact or Fiction

All cars run better with premium gasoline.

FICTION

A higher octane rating does not necessarily equate to better performance. The owner’s manual will tell you what type of gasoline is recommended for your car, and most cars are designed to run on regular gasoline. Unless you drive a high-performance car that requires a higher-octane gasoline to prevent engine knocking, the only real difference you’ll notice from upgrading to a high-octane premium gas is how much more money you are spending at the pump.

Dog Days (explain)

Mr. Know it All (useless info of the day)

Did you know you share your birthday with at least 9 million other people in the world.

Fact or Fiction

Some red food colorings are made from ground-up beetles.

FACT

Many food items, including fruit juices, candies and flavored gelatin contain cochineal, carmine or carminic acid to give them a deep red color.  These pigments are derived from the shells of the female Dactylopius coccus beetle, which is found in South and Central America.  The dye has been used for centuries and dates back to the Aztecs.  It is safer than most synthetic red dyes, apart from the rare allergic reaction.

Reason to party today – coz it’s happy hour somewhere in the world.

Happy Birthday To YOU!!!

June 27, 1859. The melody of probably the most often sung song in the world, “Happy Birthday to You,” was composed by Mildred J. Hill, a schoolteacher born at Louisville, KY, on this date. Her younger sister, Patty Smith Hill, was the author of the lyrics, which were first published in 1893 as “Good Morning to All,” a classroom greeting published in the book Song Stories for the Sunday School. The lyrics were amended in 1924 to include a stanza beginning “Happy Birthday to You.” Now it is sung somewhere in the world every minute of the day. Although the authors are believed to have earned very little from the song, reportedly it later generated about $1 million a year for its copyright owner. The song is expected to enter public domain upon expiration of copyright in 2010. Mildred Hill died at Chicago, IL, June 5, 1916, without knowing that her melody would become the world’s most popular song. See also: “Hill, Patty Smith: Birth Anniversary” (Mar 27).

Mr. Know it All (useless info of the day)

The sentence “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” uses every letter in the English language.

Fact or Fiction

If you cut a worm in half, each half will grow back into a complete worm.

FICTION

If you cut a worm in half, you will most likely end up with two halves of a dead worm.  However, some species of worms can re-grow a new tail if it is cut off (or more likely, eaten by a bird).  While it is possible that the head half of the worm may grow a new tail, the tail half will not grow a new head — so you’re unlikely to end up with more worms than you started with.

“Edumacate Me!”

It’s my segment every Sunday where my listeners and I try to learn something new from the cool guests that come on my show. I guess you can say we’re trying to get an “edumacation!”

Aileen

This week’s guest is Ms. Aileen Santos talking about:

The Top 5 Hidden Beliefs That Could Be Making YOUR Love Life Miserable

Aileen Santos is a certified Relationship Coach with a Master’s Degree in Counseling, and she helps single men and women overcome the obstacles that are keeping them from living the relationships of their dreams.

She also regularly conducts relationship workshops in their coaching & counseling clinic in Alabang, and is the author of the ebook called “Seduction Secrets That Really Work! (A Novel).”

It’s a story-slash-self-help-book rolled into one, about two shy singles who discover the “last known copy of a top secret book called Seduction Secrets That Really Work” on ebay.ph. Using the book’s techniques they transform themselves into opposite sex magnets, get into all sorts of dating misadventures…

…and discover that finding real love was a LOT more complicated than they thought.

My Websites:

Real briefly, the top 5 hidden beliefs that could be making your love life miserable include (in my own words):

5. Needing someone else to “complete you” –

You should complete yourself and know yourself fully before going into a relationship

4. Thinking that love “naturally happens” –

People tend to forget that there’s a lot of hard work involved. A relationship includes hard work! Don’t forget that.

3. Thinking that men and women are equal in relationships –

Not in this case. Men should be men and women should be women.

2. Believing in “Love at first sight”

It’s more like “lust” at first sight. Love takes time.

1. Looking for a “Soul Mate –

You should instead look for a “Soul Nurturing Mate”

Anyway, the full explanation and write up from the expert herself, Aileen Santos, will be out next week when Aileen updates her sites. Do add her up on Facebook.com/LoveAndLifeSkills

We will post updates of this soon… check her sites for info.

Fact or Fiction

Coca-Cola originally contained cocaine.

FACT

In fact, that’s how it got its name — from a blend of coca leaf and kola nut extracts used in the original 1885 formula.  At the time, cocaine was a common ingredient in medicines, and Coca-Cola was developed as a medicinal elixir.

When cocaine was later discovered to be harmful and addictive, the company phased it out, leaving only trace amounts to justify the name.  By 1929, the beverage was completely cocaine-free.

Reason to party today – coz it’s happy hour somewhere in the world.

Jaws Film Release

With its tagline “Don’t go in the water” and its ominous cello music, the Steven Spielberg–directed thriller shocked audiences on this date. Adapted from a Peter Benchley bestseller, Jaws showed a great white shark preying on the beachgoers of a New England town. It won three Oscars—best editing, best sound and best original score (by John Williams)—and was a blockbuster success.

Moment of Zen

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!

Fact or Fiction

An ordinary, everyday house fan can decapitate you.

FICTION

The answer is busted. Using a dummy to test the urban legend about a ceiling-fan decapitation, the Build Team discovered that the blades of a household fan spin too fast (26 mph) for an entire head to poke through to the neck, but also too slow to do any real damage. Turning on the fan with the neck already in place just broke the blades.

Even an industrial fan, which spins at 54 mph, and a fan created using the blades and engine of a lawnmover didn’t cause decapitation, although they did inflict deadly damage to the dummy’s head and neck.

The MYX VJ Hunt: Please Vote for DJ Issa!

Below is a letter from my good friend Issa!

Issa is one of the DJs on Mellow 94.7. She hosts the Wake-Up Show / The Mens Room every weekday morning. She’s one of the perkiest, sweetest and smartest DJs I know. Which is why I’m a firm believer that she’ll be an AWESOME VJ!

Issa is currently trying out for the MYX VJ Search. She was selected to be in the Top 12 Finalists! Show my good friend some love by casting a vote for her! Please let us know you did so we can thank you on air as well! =)

TO VOTE FOR DJ ISSA DO THIS:

Key in MYXVJ (space) 4 and send it to 2366.

You can vote as many times as you want/can.

MYX-VJ-Hunt-Search-Vote-DJ-IssaMTV-MYX-VJ-Search-Hut-DJ-Issa-Mellow-947

Oh and below is a letter from Issa herself:

“Hi! This is ***** ****** from MYX. Please make yourself available on May 31 2PM and proceed to Rm. 1302 ELJ Building, ABS-CBN. This is regarding the MYX VJ Search. We trust that is will remain confidential at this time. Please Acknowledge. Thank You.”

And this is how I found out that I was one of the Top 12 Finalists for the 2010 MYX VJ Search. That one cryptic text message announced the start of something so big that it will probably change my life.

I still can’t believe it.

I auditioned on May 14. That was a Friday – their second day for try-outs. I was in there at 10AM on the dot with just a handful of other people. Chloe had swapped timeslots with me that day because she had to host an event at night so it left me pretty much free to head on over to ABS-CBN.

I told next to nobody of my plans. I suppose I was afraid of the shame of rejection in case I didn’t get a callback. I mean, I do host for a living – I should know what I’m doing. “SHOULD” being keyword in that sentence.

I sincerely felt my heart was going to fall out of my ass the whole time. I was so nervous. Thank God I made friends in the line (yes people, THIS is where I “picked up” Jordan Sparkles) because it took my mind off things… slightly. And thank GOD I was number 9 because 9 is my favorite number and that means I didn’t have to wait for too long.

I totally blabbered through my whole audition. If you can imagine it, I talk about a zillion times more when I’m nervous. I felt like I was making only about 5% sense. I tripped up a few good times, attempted to make pa-cute upon every opportunity and even performed some unnecessary acrobatics. They must’ve thought I was a freak of nature.

The whole thing felt surreal. It was so very different from when I was trying out for radio. Radio was always like an extension of myself – I just naturally fell into place. TV though, was like… foreign territory – I felt like I had to wear army fatigues and combat boots.

I couldn’t help worrying about what I looked like on screen. I couldn’t keep my eyes on the camera. I felt like I was sweating like a pig.

I came out with no expectations at all – just the knowledge that even though I made a complete fool out of myself, at least… I was myself. So when I got that fateful text message, I was literally jumping up and down, screaming my lungs out like an idiot.

I mean, GOD – around this time just two years ago I was a Junior Nursing student, resigned to the fact that I was going to fly to the States after graduation and practice a profession I had no zeal for whatsoever. Now I’m a radio DJ and a VJ finalist for the #1 music channel in the country.

My favorite music teacher and chorale instructor back in highschool once told me that there’s no hiding from passion – that it would keep popping up in your life until you couldn’t ignore it anymore. I am living proof of that.

I knew what passion was when I fell inlove with music at the age of 3 and I would keep making my mom play Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album over and over again. I knew passion when I got up on stage for the first time and performed a song I helped write when I was 15. I knew passion when I first turned on my mic last year and reached out through the airwaves to speak to an unknown number of listeners.

For some people, their purpose in the world is to save lives, lead others or keep the peace. I think my purpose is simpler: I just want to make you smile. I know that’s cliché and maybe it sounds fake but I assure you, it’s completely true. I love talking and I love music but I especially love the fact that when I put those two together, I somehow brighten up somebody else’s day.

A lot of people might think that being a VJ is cool because you get to be on TV. To me, it’s always been so much more than that. In the end, I think I should be the next MYX VJ because aside from the fact that I’m 100% passionate about it, I also think I represent all the other people out there whose life was mapped out for them but their heart told them to follow a different path. I’m just a girl with a dream. I hope you help me make it come true.

World’s First Roller Coaster

June 13, 1884. The world’s first roller coaster opened on this day in 1884 at Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY. Built and later patented by LaMarcus Thompson, the “Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway” boasted two parallel 600-foot tracks that descended from 50 feet. The cars traveled at six miles per hour. Riders paid five cents each for their rides. The roller coaster was a sensation, and soon amusement parks all over the US and the world featured them.

The Super Bowl is bigger than the FIFA World Cup?

The world’s largest sporting event is the international football — aka soccer — tournament, the FIFA World Cup. This year, for the first time in its eighty-year history, the tournament will take place in Africa. The games begin today in Johannesburg, South Africa, and will continue for the next month, ending on July 11. There’s an official song of the event this year. Shakira and South Africa’s Freshlyground sang “Waka Waka” yesterday in both Spanish and English at the pre-tournament kick-off concert in Soweto. EA Sports simulated the games, using a soccer engine to test all the teams under the same conditions they will play in South Africa, and predicted that Spain would beat Brazil to become the World Cup Champions.

ABOUT UFO WORKSHOPS

ufo Workshops started in 2009, the brainchild of writer/director Emman Dela Cruz (Sarong Banggi), who was inspired by the pioneering success of their independent movie company ufo Pictures (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, Sarong Banggi, Endo) and the ufo Gallery (the baby of fellow creative Raymond Lee). The project brought together a diverse community of artists, filmmakers, creative Filipinos into the realm of indie filmmaking and art-making, cross-collaborations and cross-training, all towards a multi-disciplinary approach to working together.

Offering various creative disciplines for those who want to master their art or rekindle that creative spark, the Workshops’ longest-running series so far is Bing Lao’s Found Story (now on its third batch and gearing up for a regional tour). Whether its directing, short filmmaking, cinematography, writing, painting, dancing, a masterclass in acting—you ask for it, we’ll find the right mentor for you.

When ufo picks mentors, they’re looking for the kind of people who still foster professional relationships with their students beyond the classroom walls, helping them get a leg up in the industry or getting them to snap out of a creative rut. Open to everyone, and we really mean everyone because Emman has offered senior discounts, student discounts, early bird discounts and even installment plans to deserving workshoppers, the pay-it-forward mentality that rules the ufo Workshops means that we hope that one day you too will help elevate the arts community/film industry, recognizing that our differences can be our strengths, when tapped productively.

True to his personal advocacy for the “Filipino Creativity,” Emman Dela Cruz believes in the power of an alternative mentorship program as a driving force in creating the next generation of open-minded, big-hearted and community-based Filipino Creatives.

Fact or Fiction

Today is known as “D-Day” a day when 150,000 Allied Expeditionary Force lands in Normandy, France, June 6, 1944 is the date during World War II when the Allies invaded western Europe in WWII

The D in D-Day stands for “Dooms-Day?”

FICTION

June 6, 1944. In the early morning hours Allied forces landed in Normandy on the north coast of France. In an operation that took months of planning, a fleet of 2,727 ships of every description converged from British ports from Wales to the North Sea. Operation Overlord involved 2,000,000 tons of war materials, including more than 50,000 tanks, armored cars, jeeps, trucks and half-tracks. The US alone sent 1,700,000 fighting men. The Germans believed the invasion would not take place under the adverse weather conditions of this early June day. But as the sun came up, the village of Saint Mère Eglise was liberated by American parachutists, and by nightfall the landing of 155,000 Allies attested to the success of D-Day. The long-awaited second front had at last materialized.

What does the “D” in D-Day stand for?
The “D” does not stand for “Deliverance”, “Doom”, “Debarkation” or similar words. In fact, it does not stand for anything. The “D” is derived from the word “Day”. “D-Day” means the day on which a military operation begins. The term “D-Day” has been used for many different operations, but it is now generally only used to refer to the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944.

Why was the expression “D-Day” used?

When a military operation is being planned, its actual date and time is not always known exactly. The term “D-Day” was therefore used to mean the date on which operations would begin, whenever that was to be. The day before D-Day was known as “D-1”, while the day after D-Day was “D+1”, and so on. This meant that if the projected date of an operation changed, all the dates in the plan did not also need to be changed. This actually happened in the case of the Normandy Landings. D-Day in Normandy was originally intended to be on 5 June 1944, but at the last minute bad weather delayed it until the following day. The armed forces also used the expression “H-Hour” for the time during the day at which operations were to begin.

Fact or Fiction

A farmer beheaded a chicken in hopes of dinner, but the chicken survived 18 more months without a head. A farmer thought he was just putting dinner on the table when he picked up an axe and beheaded one of his chickens. Turned out he had a legend on his hands after the now headless rooster bobbed and weaved back to the henhouse and lived for 18 more months — without a head.

FACT

Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colo., did indeed own the world’s only surviving headless chicken, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He wielded the infamous axe in September 1945, unaware that he and his rooster would go down in history. The animal, now dubbed Mike and celebrated with a festival, Web sites and various magazine articles, apparently survived because the blade missed his jugular vein and a clot prevented him from bleeding to death. The axe blow landed high enough that most of the chicken’s brain stem and one ear remained intact. Olsen kept the animal fed and watered by inserting an eyedropper directly into his gullet. Eighteen months after the chicken lost his head he choked to death in a motel room. Residents of Fruita remember Mike as “a big fat chicken who didn’t know he didn’t have a head.”

Fact or Fiction

Elephants are afraid of mice.

FICTION

There is no evidence that elephants are afraid of mice, according to animal behavior experts. In fact, elephants do not appear to be very fearful, especially in the wild, where they share habitats with fierce predators such as lions and tigers. Most elephants in captivity coexist peacefully with rodents, which nest in the abundance of hay and straw and feast on the pachyderm’s leftovers. Elephants can behave unpredictably in captivity, however, and are very protective of their young.
