Fact or Fiction

If you cut a worm in half, each half will grow back into a complete worm.

FICTION

If you cut a worm in half, you will most likely end up with two halves of a dead worm.  However, some species of worms can re-grow a new tail if it is cut off (or more likely, eaten by a bird).  While it is possible that the head half of the worm may grow a new tail, the tail half will not grow a new head — so you’re unlikely to end up with more worms than you started with.

The Super Bowl is bigger than the FIFA World Cup?

The world’s largest sporting event is the international football — aka soccer — tournament, the FIFA World Cup. This year, for the first time in its eighty-year history, the tournament will take place in Africa. The games begin today in Johannesburg, South Africa, and will continue for the next month, ending on July 11. There’s an official song of the event this year. Shakira and South Africa’s Freshlyground sang “Waka Waka” yesterday in both Spanish and English at the pre-tournament kick-off concert in Soweto. EA Sports simulated the games, using a soccer engine to test all the teams under the same conditions they will play in South Africa, and predicted that Spain would beat Brazil to become the World Cup Champions.

Fact or Fiction

A farmer beheaded a chicken in hopes of dinner, but the chicken survived 18 more months without a head. A farmer thought he was just putting dinner on the table when he picked up an axe and beheaded one of his chickens. Turned out he had a legend on his hands after the now headless rooster bobbed and weaved back to the henhouse and lived for 18 more months — without a head.

FACT

Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colo., did indeed own the world’s only surviving headless chicken, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He wielded the infamous axe in September 1945, unaware that he and his rooster would go down in history. The animal, now dubbed Mike and celebrated with a festival, Web sites and various magazine articles, apparently survived because the blade missed his jugular vein and a clot prevented him from bleeding to death. The axe blow landed high enough that most of the chicken’s brain stem and one ear remained intact. Olsen kept the animal fed and watered by inserting an eyedropper directly into his gullet. Eighteen months after the chicken lost his head he choked to death in a motel room. Residents of Fruita remember Mike as “a big fat chicken who didn’t know he didn’t have a head.”

Creating That Lasting Impression (Edumacation on Job Hunting & Blind Dating)

On my radio show, “The G-Spot” with DJ Vince G, I have a segment I call “Edumacate Me!” where my listeners and I try to learn something new from a guest I bring on. This week’s guests were some TV show hosts and executives at an online job portal who were here to teach us how succeed at finding a job and going on a blind date…. AT THE SAME TIME!

My guests, Marybeth Nave and Fritz Capulong, said that finding a job and going on a blind date are pretty much the same as you don’t know what to expect for both of them, but also, because the way to succeed for both is to “Create That Lasting Impression” that will make your potential employer, or potential mate, remember you.

We had way too many callers with questions and inquiries, but fortunately, our friends gave me more info for you to use before you go out on that blind date, or before you go out for your next job interview.

Hope you learn a lot and get a good “edumacation” from this!

Edumacate-Me-The-G-Spot-with-DJ-Vince-G-Mellow-947-guests-Marybeth-Fritz Edumacate-Me-The-G-Spot-with-DJ-Vince-G-Mellow-947-guests-Marybeth-Nave

Creating That Lasting Impression

Looking for a job is like going out on a blind date; to get that job or get another date with your dream girl, you must be able to create a positive and lasting impression.

Most of the executives and HR personnel I’ve talked with said, as much as they want to get the possible candidates among all the applicants it is the one whom they remember that they eventually hire. I can same the same thing with dating. Friends and acquaintances that I’ve spoken with said that they go out with the most interesting person they know.

The questions, now, is how can you make a very good lasting impression?

  1. Know your strengths – there are many people who can do the same things you are doing. At the same time, there are so many people who are more qualified than you on certain things. But what can help you stand-out?

It is your strengths? Each of us are unique. We have different gifts to offer. Knowing your talents and strengths will make you stand-out. A common example is when we see a bombshell that is holding hands and walking with an average Joe. We often see comedians going out with models who are young enough to be their daughters. Why do these comedians stand-out? What makes these bombshells go out with these average Joes?

Comedians know how to play on their strengths. They know how to maximize it for a lasting impression. They make these beautiful women laugh and have a good time. They make people feel good about themselves.

How can you find your strengths? What do you like doing without someone telling you about it? What can you do for hours and not get bored? How can you make a difference with what you like doing?

  1. Highlight your strengths – the only way to get noticed by people is when you tell them how good you are. You must be your own cheering squad!

How do you tell people about your strengths without sounding too proud? Tooting your own horn too loud will cause some people to tune you out or be turned-of. You must be able to do it with such grace that it is almost a soft sell.

When you are applying for a job, use the power of the internet. Blogging is very easy. Creating your own home page is now very affordable. You can ask your prospective employers to look at your site or for artists or creative designers, your portfolio. You can use Multiply or Facebook.

When going out on a blind date, ask your friends to build you up! You can treat this friend afterwards. There is nothing like a testimonial from other people; whom your date trusts, to build up your reputation. The key here, make your date excited to see you.

The key here is to make yourself stand-out.

  1. Impression – how do you want to be remembered is one things you should think about. You have been invited by your dream company for an interview or your blind date to eagerly meet you… what can you do to make them remember you and ask you to come back?

People create an impression of us from the moment we enter the door to the moment we leave the place. To be able to create a very good impression, we must able to conduct ourselves in a very professional but friendly manner. If you are a casual, people may see that you’re not respecting them.

By being professional and friendly you must have these:

  • Confidence – knowing that you have something to offer
  • Communication skills – making them understand that you have something that they need or want
  • Appearance – looking the part of what or who you say you are

When taken all these three points together, you will be able to sell yourself to your prospective company or your dream girl.

Fact or Fiction

Gelatin is made from animal bones and hides.

FACT

Gelatin is made by boiling the hides and bones of cows and pigs to release their collagen, which is boiled some more, filtered, dried and ground into a powder. Because it has been so extensively processed, gelatin is not classified as an animal product by the government, but strict vegetarians avoid it nonetheless.!

Fact or Fiction

Chocolate is toxic to dogs and can kill them.

FACT

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine (a compound related to caffeine), which can sicken and kill family pets. Three factors determine how toxic the sweet stuff will be to a particular animal: the type of chocolate, the size of the animal and the amount of chocolate ingested. The most dangerous confections are unsweetened baker’s chocolate and powdered cocoa, the least, white chocolate.

Symptoms of theobromine poisoning include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, restlessness and increased urination. In severe cases, cardiac arrhythmia and seizures can result. The possibility that an animal will kill itself with chocolate is very low. More likely it will get a nasty tummy ache. In any case, it is still prudent to keep all chocolate far away from pets.

Today is Robert’s Rules Day, a day to mark the birth, in 1837, of one Henry Martyn Robert. After Robert was disappointed in the way he himself handled a meeting, he resolved to put together a parliamentary guide to help others (and himself) facing similar situations.

Robert’s Rules of Order is the short title of a book containing rules of order intended to be adopted as a parliamentary authority for use by a deliberative assembly.

Still need to see it though coz War Machine was cool, but not on the top of my list for coolest movies by a long shot!

This is a crazy parody of Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s song Telephone. It seems like it’s done by some locals who are VERY resourceful. I’m actually really impressed with the resourcefulness that they have for this low budget video but that really gets the video of Lady Gaga. Yeah it’s a bit Ghetto, but I’m sure they worked with a 0 budget! So any haters out there, I’d like to see you come up with a video like this with no budget. =P

Fact or Fiction

It’s hotter in the summertime because the Earth is closer to the sun.

FICTION

The Earth is actually closer to the sun in January, and farthest from the sun in July.  It’s not the distance from the sun that causes the change in seasons, but our position relative to the sun.  The Earth is tilted at a 23.5-degree angle to its orbit around the sun.  In the summer, even though it’s slightly further from the sun, the northern hemisphere is tilted so the sun’s rays hit it more directly than they do in the wintertime, which is what makes it hotter.  Because the days are longer in the summertime, the sun also has more time to heat up the Earth.

The Earth’s tilt is also why the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere.

Life Happens… One Song at a Time

It hasn’t been too long yet since I started my job as a radio DJ on Mellow 94.7. It’s one of those jobs that I thought could only be a dream, and no more. Fortunately for me, I never really limited myself with my own glass ceiling and instead, naively set out to conquer the world.

Now as most of you know, there are many things in life that seem extremely simple from the outside looking in. This false impression makes many Guinness world records seem easy enough for a child to accomplish, but can be unexplainably complicated when you’re doing it yourself.  Well, DJing, is not really one of those jobs. It’s pretty easy, if you don’t stress out like an autistic genius in a room full of network marketers. Well, right now, I’m that autistic dude with pyramid scheming fudgetards approaching me left and right.

I don’t know why, but I have a tendency to want everything to be perfect, and it stresses me out when it’s not. Furthermore, I like planning things out two weeks in advance. So when I’m sitting in that DJ booth, two things usually happen. One – I try to plan the perfect shpeal uhhhh….. stutter… stutter…. I mean…. spiel… the perfect spiel every time I go on air. And two – I try to plan out the next hour full of adlibs, greetings, song requests, music, ads, time checks, sponsorships and the kitchen sink! Often, this results in a cluster f*ck of craziness.

So instead, I sat myself down and remembered the last time I was in a high pressure situation. It was my junior year of college and I (for reasons I still do not comprehend) ran as president for this international business organization, and WON. I was there at the first meeting with my team discussing (what seemed to be) the 500 tasks we had to accomplish within 8 weeks. This included raising a few thousand dollars, organizing two charity events, setting up professional mixers, interviewing about 50 professionals, taking in-depth exams per week, preparing presentations every week and more! Just imagine Donald Trump’s show, “The Apprentice,” with less glamor, more work and MORE DONALDS breathing down your neck!

I almost had a nervous breakdown that night.

With ways unknown to me, I somehow made it through that first meeting. Then, I somehow made it through the first night, then the next morning, the next afternoon, the next day and so on.  Eight weeks later, I was amazingly able to accomplish all the goals set out for me and my team. What I realized, was that you have to take things one step at a time.

“The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Chinese Proverb

I was stressing out when I thought of ALL the millions of things I had to do for the next eight weeks. Coz let me tell you, there was A LOT! But, if I break it down to one task at a time – one phone call, one email, one idea, one little meeting; then the big giant stress ball doesn’t seem so huge anymore.

I realized this while I was at work today.  I started to just worry about my next song, instead of the next 240 minutes. There is a lot you do need to do in radio – pick your songs, read some greetings, check messages sent over text, messages on Facebook, read the ads, make sure the right ads are playing, play sponsored songs, make sure your volume is ok, prepare the phone patch, get your background music going, give a time check, talk into the mic, get your news ready, then all back to getting the next song ready again coz the amount of time it took me to write this already caused that one song to pass….

Get it? Lots to do. But, instead of stressing on all that. I just need to take things one song at a time. It makes everything a lot simpler.

Somehow, they haven’t fired me yet from this DJing thing. So I guess I must be doing ok. One song at a time, I’m pretty good at that.

“Yard by yard, life is hard. But inch by inch, life’s a cinch!” -anonymous quote

Anyway, that’s my two cents for the day. Hope it helps you somehow. But I gotta go now…. My next song is up…

Fact or Fiction

Sunscreens with an SPF of 40 or 50 provide significantly more protection against UV rays than SPF 30 sunscreens.

FICTION

Tests have shown than sunscreens with an SPF of 15 block 93 percent of UV rays, while SPF 30 sunscreens block about 97 percent. Anything higher than 30 still hovers around 97 percent. The Food and Drug Administration has recommended limiting SPF values on sunscreen labels to SPF 30 to prevent consumers from spending more time in the sun than they should

Fact or Fiction

You are more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark.

FACT!

According to the National Weather Service, the odds of being struck by lightning in the United States in any given year are 1 in 700,000. By contrast the odds of being attacked by a shark in the United States are roughly 1 in 8 million.

So don’t be afraid to go in the water — just be sure to get out and seek shelter at the first sign of a thunderstorm, because you’ll be a sitting duck in the water or on the beach.
